Most men skip the step that matters most. Great hair is mostly about how you dry it. Product only holds the shape you create. With a pre-styler, a hair dryer and the right finishing product, a textured crop, quiff or side part looks like it came from the barber.
This guide shows the method step by step and links to our buying guides for sea salt spray, pomade and clay, texture powder, hairspray and hot air brushes.
Quick answer: on towel-dried hair, add a pre-styler such as sea salt spray, blow-dry the hair in the direction you want it to sit, then work in a pea-sized amount of clay, paste or pomade and finish with a light hairspray if needed.
Which product does what?
| Product | Hold | Finish | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea salt spray | Light | Matte, gritty | Pre-styling, messy texture |
| Texture powder | Light to medium | Matte | Volume at the roots, fine hair |
| Matte clay or paste | Medium to strong | Matte | Textured crops, quiffs |
| Pomade | Medium to strong | Shiny or matte | Pompadours, side parts, slick backs |
| Gel or cream | Light to strong | Varies | Curls, wet looks, control |
| Hairspray | Light to strong | Invisible | Locking the finished style |
Not sure which you need? Matte clay suits most short, textured styles; pomade suits classic, neat looks. Our pomade and clay guide compares them in detail, and our gel and cream guide covers softer options.
Step 1: start with towel-dried hair
- Wash or wet your hair. Styling works best on hair that is clean or at least damp.
- Towel-dry gently. Hair should be damp, not dripping.
- Add a pre-styler. Four to six sprays of sea salt spray from roots to ends, or a little volumizing spray for fine hair.
See our sea salt spray guide for options.
Step 2: blow-dry for volume
This is where shape comes from. Hair sets in the position it dries in.
- Use medium heat. Hold the dryer 15 to 20 cm away.
- Lift at the roots. Use your fingers or a round brush to push the front up and back for a quiff, or across for a side part.
- Dry the sides flat. Point the airflow down to keep the sides tight.
- Finish with cool air. A few seconds of cool air helps set the shape.
A hot air brush dries and styles in one step. For a separate dryer and brush, see our hair dryers and brushes guide.
Step 3: apply your styling product
- Use less than you think. A pea-sized amount for short hair; a little more for thick or longer hair.
- Warm it between your palms. Spread it until it almost disappears.
- Work from back to front. Start at the crown and back, then the sides, then the front, so you do not overload the front.
- Shape with your fingers. Twist small sections for texture, or comb for a neater look.
For lift without weight, tap a little texture powder into the roots before or instead of clay.
Step 4: finish and fix
- Mist hairspray from 20 to 30 cm. A light hold keeps texture movable; a strong hold locks a pompadour. See our hairspray guide.
- Refresh during the day. Wet fingertips can reactivate most clays and pomades.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to style men’s hair?
Towel-dry, add a little sea salt spray, blow-dry in the direction you want, then work in a pea-sized amount of matte clay.
Clay or pomade: which should I use?
Clay gives matte, textured hold for crops and quiffs. Pomade gives a neater, often shinier finish for pompadours and side parts.
Do I need a hair dryer?
For volume, yes. Hair holds the shape it dries in. Air-drying works for relaxed, messy styles.
How much product should I use?
Start with a pea-sized amount for short hair. Add more only if needed.
How do I make my hair stay up all day?
Blow-dry it up at the roots, use a medium to strong hold clay or pomade, and finish with hairspray.
Is it bad to use product every day?
No, as long as you wash it out regularly and do not sleep in heavy product.
